Virginia Votes Yes on Redistricting Referendum

Democratic gerrymander passes by overwhelming margin after massive volume surge on prediction markets.

Virginia voters approved a Democratic plan to allow them to redraw the state congressional map for the remainder of the decade — part of the partisan battle over redistricting happening in several states ahead of the 2026 midterm election, as they boost Democrats' chances of winning four additional U.S. House seats in November's midterm elections. The outcome explains the massive moves in Virginia redistricting markets: the map is considered to be a Democratic gerrymander, which, based on previous election results, would favor Democrats in 10 out of the 11 districts.

Markets had priced this outcome perfectly. The "Yes, 3-6%" margin prediction spiked to 99¢ from 38¢, while the broader margin markets see traders now pricing in what Democratic state House Speaker Don Scott called changing "the trajectory of the 2026 midterms". Republicans believe they can win up to nine more House seats in newly redrawn districts in Texas, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio, but Virginia's Democratic counter-gerrymander neutralizes some of these gains.
