Live Nation Monopoly Settlement Rocks Ticketmaster

Justice Department settlement ends landmark antitrust trial one week after it began.

The Justice Department reached a settlement today in its antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation Entertainment in a case that alleged an illegal monopoly over live events, causing prediction markets to crash from 55¢ to 5¢ for courts finding Live Nation a monopoly before 2030. The settlement ranges from $200-$280 million in civil penalties across the 40 states that sued the company. Ticketmaster will now have to open up its technology to other third-party ticket sellers, with prior long-term exclusivity contracts shrinking down to just four years while allowing venues to allocate a portion of their tickets to competing platforms. The dramatic 50-cent collapse in the KXLIVENATIONUS-30-JAN01 market signals traders had priced in a much harsher breakup scenario that never materialized.
