Costa Rica's Grynspan surges in UN race

Betting odds rocket from 13¢ to 91¢ as traders price in likely Secretary-General victory.

Rebeca Grynspan's path to UN Secretary-General looks increasingly certain to traders, with her odds exploding from 13¢ to 91¢ after Costa Rica formally registered her candidacy for the 2027-2031 term in March. The 70-year-old economist currently serves as Secretary-General of UN Trade and Development, making her the first woman to hold that position, and would become the first woman to lead the United Nations if elected. Her prospects improved further when Argentine diplomat Virginia Gamba was removed from the race after the Maldives withdrew her nomination, reducing Latin American competition and giving "Costa Rica a cleaner field than it had a day ago." The market is pricing in what could be a historic breakthrough for gender representation at the UN's highest level.
